Oh my gosh, someone podficced me! As a present for another person, and together with several other Dark Angel stories (including some of my favorites), which is the most awesome thing ever. I haven't listened to it yet, and it may take me a while because I have some irrational issues with hearing things read aloud, but they do not interfere with my recognition that this is so cool.
I've revised my profile to more clearly communicate my feelings on this sort of activity. They are basically, "yes you can use any of my things to make other things and you don't have to ask permission." But more clarity is always good. Actually I should come up with a podfic policy stating that I'm also okay with altering the story when you read it, as long as you post with a notice to that effect. Because I am totally okay with that. Is there a protocol among podficcers for that kind of thing?

I've never talked to a podficcer who actively wanted to alter the story when they read it. I mean, I think they'll gloss over typos and things like that but for the most part they don't go off-script afaik. As a listener I don't think I would like that unless it was some kind of collaborative project between author and podficcer, but ymmv.

The kind of changes I was thinking of may be more like a mashup/remix situation--like if you wanted to make a fic into a play performed by multiple people, and you'd have to properly adapt it and change and cut some things that can't be audio-staged. (Not that anything this amazing will ever happen to anything I write, but you know, in principle. *g*) Or reading a fic and reading the scenes in a different order than they're written. That kind of thing. All this kind of stuff can be done in collaboration and that would be great, but I don't think people should have to consult with the original author as long as they include a note up top that they changed some things, and a link to the original.
Or, I mean, if someone reads a story and they're mostly a podficcer, so they want to podfic it, but it also makes them want to write a story inspired by that one, and they create a hybrid of their own work and mine so they're straight up reading my fic and adding/changing things, I think that would be really neat. IDK, just in general I feel like I'm in favor of any kind of transformation, no permission needed, as long as it doesn't represent itself as a faithful copy of the original. I especially want to leave the door open for criticism, without making people ask to do it or tell me personally that they've done it. So my policy would be "do whatever you want, but tell people you did stuff and link the original."
