some_stars | (no subject)

I am marathoning these old Friends episodes because they make me happy, because Rachel my beautiful queen and also Chandler my other beautiful queen, but man, I had completely forgotten how obsessed with gay panic this show was. Were all nineties sitcoms like that? With at least one "ha ha gay oh no!" joke in every single episode? Or alternately, "ha ha like gay but not!" or possibly just "ha ha, gay!" Like, I just grabbed a bunch of season two episodes at random (season five is filmed fanfic, nothing after that exists at all) based on my dim memories stirred by the Wikipedia summaries, and I swear every single one so far has had at least one moment like that. Three of them had entire plots about it. You'd think it was the actual topic of the show.

So I guess that's another way in which it made me happy, because despite all the backlash and all the crap and all the everything, we really have come a hell of a long way in less than twenty years, and that's pretty amazing. Also I thought maybe I might not laugh at the jokes anymore now that I'm used to proper intelligent sitcoms with no laugh tracks and quality writing, but I have choked on my own spittle from laughing too hard three times so far. To be fair this might be because I imprinted on these jokes many, many years ago. They're probably not actually that funny.

--also I have to say, looking at this show from my current perspective? I really want the fic where everyone except Ross has a sex pollen orgy. FANDOM WHAT HAVE YOU DONE.
