the avengers: finally
Waiting for the post-credits scene is a lot more annoying now that every shot has CGI and the credits take ten minutes.
update: TOTALLY WORTH IT. My favorite scene of the entire movie, in fact. Now to read all five thousand reaction posts and find fic.
My end verdict: eh, it was alright. Although to be fair, I was so distracted by needing to go to the bathroom that I really couldn't have appreciated the ~45 minutes up to when the aliens started coming out of the portal, no matter what. I couldn't even laugh for fear of peeing. Then I took a running bathroom break and got back about a minute before "You remember Budapest very differently than I do." Did I miss anything worth downloading a cam for?
But yeah, basically...too much non-character-based fighting. The first Iron Man/Thor fight should have been cut right in half, that shit was ridiculous in the boring way. And there's only so long I can stay interested in people punching giant robots without a break for non-robot activities, and the almost-final battle waaaaay surpassed that limit. The robot monotony was broken up with some nice character moments, to be sure, but mostly it was just Too Much. And like all comic book movies these days, it had way too many climaxes.
And Joss clearly tried valiantly to fill this movie with characterization, and he did quite well given the limitations of the form; I'm very excited to see the deleted scenes, which will probably make all the character arcs feel less rushed. IDK, it was fun, there were good parts and I'm excited for the fic. But I really did feel like I kept waiting for the next good moment, and even when those moments were frequent they never quite felt like a whole.
However, it has been well established that I'm impossible to satisfy these days. And btw I am just not even going to engage with this idea going around that I'm not allowed to be angry about women and gender in this movie because Natasha was awesome, which she certainly was. If this is really the best you can imagine or expect...I don't know what to say to you.
HOWEVER. Tony/Bruce, Natasha/Clint, Natasha/Maria Hill, Natasha EVERYTHING NATASHA, Steve/everyone, EVERYONE/everyone preferably all at once, Loki/...everyone YES I WANT IT and I am not ashamed, Thor/Loki which I already kind of wanted after watching Thor the other day and that fetish-fuel ending did NOT HELP, pre-movie Maria Hill/Agent Coulson--maybe even gen, they would have a lot to talk/gossip/gripe about over drinks. These beautiful things were given to me. As was the shawarma scene. So I'm happy, pretty much.
Possible second favorite scene: Steve finally gets a cultural reference! Best moment of his day, I am quite certain.
Also: recs are welcome! Desired! There was already way too much fic to navigate before the movie even came out, and I can no longer spend entire days making my way through the mess. Especially if it's an Avengers orgy; I want to know about that IMMEDIATELY. But also any of the beautiful things mentioned above.
edit: ACTUALLY, you know what, I have more squee than that in me, and when I get back from dinner and also have a margarita in me, I will share it. I don't squee enough lately, mostly because my brain no longer knows how to make sentences, which I should probably look into? So it's just frustrating. But I will do my best.

things i liked: science bros! cap compares everyone to bucky/the howling commandos! natasha playing with everyone's expectations of a tiny woman! natasha stealing weapons from alien robot things! bruce! fury being a manipulative bastard oh-my-gosh is coulson going to beat you up when he gets out of ICU!
i agree that there could have been less mindless robot punching and more character time. i wish to gather all the characters together and feed them tea and cookies while we watch disney movies.
