I have had yet another BEST VID IDEA EVER, for Princess Tutu this time, and I need to immediately learn to vid with .mkv files before it goes away. Is this possible at all? I'm a little worried about buying the DVDs and ripping them because I still don't understand deinterlacing, like, even a TINY BIT. And this is not the kind of vid I can put off while I painfully learn Avisynth (which I still don't believe is actually possible, especially not right now while life is making my head is explode).

This idea, omg. I desperately want to tell people about it but I also don't want to spoil the surprise. I thought of it in the car, while listening to a whole other song, and it made me snort repeatedly.

I use mkvs all the time! I just open 'em in MPEG Streamclip and clip from there - although it must be said that MPEG Streamclip, on my computer anyway, doesn't like them, and they play kind of stuttery and take a LONG time to convert. But I'm sure they're usable in whatever program you use to clip.

I find it pretty easy to clip .mkvs ... using Avisynth. 90% of it is just making sure you have everything you need installed, and then it's just a one-line text file and choirs of angels start singing from the heavens, etc. If you end up trying your hand at Avisynth anyway at some point, it's definitely worth it. (Uh, and I can tell you what you'd need to install, but I figured if you want to wait on Avisynth I will wait before I spam you ...)
