This series of posts by
arduinna about fandom in the nineties is WONDERFUL and fills me with memories and nostalgia and so forth. This post re: same by
vass is also wonderful. MEMORIES. Much of the social intricacies of the whole culture passed me by, because I was 12 when I got into fandom, in 1996, and couldn't get onto most mailing lists for a few years until I learned to sound older. But I participated more than I remembered until now, sending feedback and joining less strictly policed groups on Onelist and of course on AOL (holics, represent! by which I mean...
pearwaldorf, pretty much. ETA: and
shaniofslut, omg, where is my brain even.). Also, I miss archives. Archives were great. I love AO3 but it's just not the same, because people are much less willing to tag things in uniform ways--which these days, to me, usually indicates better writing than heavily-tagged stuff, but there was something so easy and comforting about being able to tick the boxes for H/C or character death or rape/noncon, or even better the box for the exact episode you wanted reaction-fic for--seriously, that was the best feature EVER--and get back a whole list.
Also, re: video on dialup, I remember slooooowly downloading a video clip of the entire Mulder/Krycek scene from "The Red and the Black"--with the kiss!!!11--in 1998. And watching it over and over, because for some reason I wasn't taping episodes back then despite having a VCR and being in full-blown fandom mode (I didn't tape MST3K either, no idea why) so that was my only shot at seeing it again. So much nostalgia :D
