I seem to have Done Something to my toe, in that it is red and swollen and sore always and hurts worse when moved, and it's been like this since I stubbed it over 36 hours ago. The pain isn't very bad at all (except when moved) but it's kind of freaking me out, especially since when I broke my elbow many years ago, the pain was remarkably low for the first couple days. I assume there's nothing that medical professionals would actually do for a very slightly broken fourth toe, unless it was like snapped in half or something, which it clearly is not. But it's really disturbing to me because there's something going on inside there where I can't see it, and I don't know what it is and I can't predict how it will progress. Also I can't play DDR until it gets better, which is even more upsetting.

You can ice it for now, and once the swelling goes down you can tape it to the toe next to it-- your unbroken toe will act as a splint.

If, several weeks down the line, you're having pain without swelling and taping doesn't seem to help, then you should get an x-ray, to rule out the possibility that it was dislocated. I spent six months walking on a dislocated toe and treating it for a sprain before the third physical therapist who looked at it figured out it was dislocated and put it back. I do not recommend doing this!

I've had broken toes, and they felt like that sounds. Stay off it as much as possible.
