vid recs!

So day two of that challenge/meme thing is reccing things by other people. I LOVE reccing, I just rarely do it anymore because a couple years ago I lost the ability to write any kind of statement or discussion longer than a sentence but shorter than a page, plus I've kind of been in and out of fandom the last few years. But I love it, so I'm doing this day.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

I'm doing all vids, and while none of them have "few to no" comments, they're all vids that have fewer comments than most of my other favorites, or that I haven't seen/never saw people talking about. Mostly. Also I'm sticking to just three because otherwise I would go on FOREVER.

1. 3 AM Call by [personal profile] shati (Heroes)

I loved Niki SO MUCH, with so much anger at the show and at fandom for not noticing how amazing she was even despite everything. But I also just loved her, because she was amazing and captured my heart and I just loved looking at her face no matter what she was doing. And the thing about Niki is that so much of what attention the show and fandom did pay her was focused on Jessica--as if they were really two different characters, as if dissociative identity was Niki's actual superpower. Those were the exciting moments, that was what people wanted to see. But the moments that made me fall in love with the character were the moments this vid is all about--the searching, the dislocation, struggling to find herself and take control of her own life. Fighting to become whole. This isn't a triumphant vid; it's about being lost. It's about Niki, and I love it for that. (And also because it's really, really good.)

2. I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker by [personal profile] kuwdora (Stargate SG-1)

I have to confess, I've never actually seen the whole last half of SG-1. It just kind of...passed me by, fannishly. But I know a fair bit about it, enough to love this vid, which is about the whole series and all the different Sams that we meet. The music choice surprised me at first but it works so well--the wistful tone, by turns funny and impassioned and sad, is just perfect for the idea of all these lives branching off of and orbiting the "real" Sam.

3. Whatever It Is by [personal profile] usuallyhats (Doctor Who)

I have a very special place in my heart for multi-era Doctor Who vids, not least because I'd love to make one but am in no way capable of that kind of extended clip-searching. And this is one of my favorites--it's sweet and funny and brave and kind, a tribute to companions and all the amazing things they've done over the years.
