What's the first book that you remember reading as a child that moved you?

....oh, man. Uh, my memory is kind of--extremely patchy without a direct reminder? Like, EXTREMELY patchy, especially the "remember/select one thing from this category" kind of memory. But it was definitely some sad cat story from a book of cat stories, because animal stories were the only kind that moved me at all for a long time, like until I was twelve or thirteen I just didn't really have feelings about stories about people. So, one of the many many MANY books of cat stories where a cat dies at the end, after leading a heartwarming life full of mildly charming anecdotes. I read a LOT of those.

What was your first online fandom? Were you a fan before that?

The first fandom I actually participated in was X-Files, but I found fandom a year earlier after watching Star Trek: First Contact and loving it way more than I expected to. (It also turned me gay, or at least the timing was perfect enough that I like to credit it.) I read a LOT of TNG fanfic of all kinds, and dozens of tie-in novels, and watched reruns on cable in the mornings. I even sent occasional feedback, but I didn't write any fic or participate in any discussions on usenet or wherever. And then at the end of next summer, 1997, FX started showing in-order uncut reruns of The X-Files, and I watched some and went searching for fanfic, found the Gossamer archive and some AOL message boards, and that was that.

(And then within a couple months I started watching MST3K and lurking on RATMM, and then watching H:LotS and lurking on a.t.h. and a mailing list, and I pretty much never stopped acquiring new fandoms. Also, man, I miss usenet.)

Usenet was awesome! I think X-Files fandom was a great place to start - it had absolutely everything. I read there, but didn't create - in fact I didn't write an X-Files fic until 2009, and that was a crossover!
