This is how I felt about Doctor Who:

Yaaaay, this is gonna be awesome!
This is awesome!
...huh.
Awesome!
AWESOME
...*annoyed sigh*
*SIGH*
That's kind of neat.
Awww, cute!
*SIGH*
What--that doesn't--
When did that--WHAT.
Okay, this is not good at all.
Wait, that was good!
...no.
--good?
OH COME ON.
Hey, that's pretty gr--MOFFAT. NO.
blaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

~the end~

I could go into much more detail (pacing! tone! plotting made overly-baroque to disguise sloppiness! sexism! etc.!) but I'm trying to spend LESS time thinking about things that make me unhappy. I will just have to regard season five as a beautiful perfect jewel that I shall always treasure, and s6 as sometimes amazing, extremely uneven fanfic. I mean, there were some fabulous moments in this episode, but they were like delicious chocolate chips studded throughout a really disappointing cookie; they never seemed to add up to anything or affect the whole. So: fanfic, jewel.

Yes, I felt exactly the same way - there were bits I liked, but overall it just felt sloppy and tonally strange and full of tiny to not-so-tiny annoyances. I'm really surprised by the extremely positive reaction I'm seeing everywhere, honestly.
