best part of the movie: getting to use this icon again

I have discovered a question about Captain America, the movie, that I need answered, or possibly there isn't an answer so helpful suggestions would be helpful. It concerns Bucky and specifically, what we were supposed to think had happened to him when Steve found him at the Red Skull's weapons factory(...that's what it was, right? everything went by so fast, and I'm so terrible at movies). He was strapped down to a table and there was an ominous but poorly lit machine pointing at him, which the camera focused on for a second. And he was reciting his serial number which implies he was trying to resist...something. So was this something that was supposed to be clear from the movie itself, or a reference to some comics stuff--I can think of a few things, but none of them really fit--or just...thrown in there for drama? Or what? Because I want to write some H/C set between that scene and when they turn back up at camp, and I need more information, or more freedom to make shit up.

(And if I am going to make shit up, ideas for what said shit could be would be appreciated too. Everything that isn't feelings is SO HARD for me.)

I was wondering that too! But I got kind of distracted by how good Bucky looked, all tousled and sweaty and ripper sweater-y.

...sorry, what were you saying?

You know, my tinhat theory is that they were testing a version of the super-soldier serum on him, since the table looked an awful lot like the injection table that Steve was on, and he'll show up in the Avengers movie having dragged himself out of that canyon.

... But that might just be me.

Ah! In that case, I am not going to be helpful, because I don't know that much about the comics continuities. Let me ask N., who is the biggest Captain America geek I know. If he has any ideas I will get back to you. :)

N. thinks that if it's a reference at all, it's a reference to Bucky getting tied to tables with death rays pointed at him a LOT in the 1940s. So there's probably no official movie canon about it, just "The Red Skull has Bucky captured and Cap has to save him!" is a trope from the early days of the comic.

The director of Captain America has said that he would LOVE to do a Winter Soldier movie with that actor in the role, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a way to work in a subtle springboard for a Winter Soldier movie. Maybe melding the comics canon storyline with a hybrid movie storyline where maybe Bucky is a mind-wiped tool of Hydra, not the Russians. Either way I take it as confirmation that Bucky is NOT DEAD in movieverse. :D

i don't have any thoughts beyond "cap/bucky 4eva" and wanting all of the slash. it may have something to do with the friends storyline and it may have something to do with how both actors look.
