Captain America: now I have seen it! It was pretty good, though it didn't grab me as fiercely as First Class or Iron Man did. I would say about 50% of my enjoyment was anticipating all the fic, though I feel no particular urge to write any myself. There was almost no egregious, actively offensive stuff that I noticed, so that was a pleasant change! Of course it still has the baseline level of "this story is about a man, there's one named woman, who punches people and shoots things but her actual narrative role is to Have Faith in the man," and that is ever more wearying to me--and I really, really need to stop getting to the theater in time for previews, because the total void of female faces or voices or names just gets worse and worse--but as far as those movies go, this was about as good as it could be. Not "good," but, you know. It made me tired, but not particularly angry.
And--Peggy was wonderful, I have to say. I wanted more, but I really really liked her and there was, at least, a tiny bit of characterization, and all the shooting was great too. And there was an old woman with a machine gun at one point and that was MAGICAL.
I don't know nearly enough history to comment one way or another on this Pointedly Integrated version of the army, although it was really just the Howling Commandos, who seemed to be made up of a bunch of different divisions and even nationalities, so possibly that was the point? But I really don't have the knowledge base to form an opinion other than that it was nicer to see than the alternative.
The movie in general--I do like the way Marvel is developing this universe. It's really starting to feel more like a comic book, because the essential thing about comics is the shared-world aspect, all the layers of stories and characters. So having Howard Stark there was fantastic--I anticipate so much post-defrosting fic based on Steve having known Tony's dad, and maybe even some WW2-era fic about Howard, this is fandom so it will almost certainly show up. And I loved getting a look at the alternate technology history of the movieverse, seeing how far back the changes go. And seeing more Marvel aircraft, their planes are always so fucking ridiculous and awesome.
And of course, of COURSE, I love Bucky. Totally reimagined and in an AWESOME way, that makes it work for modern audiences but doesn't lose the emotional core. And they left the door wide open for Winter Soldier shenanigans, of course, I would expect no less. This movie wasn't especially slashy on the whole but I want SO MUCH Steve/Bucky--I mean, they weren't not slashy, but it didn't grab me and shake me back and forth, you know? But that doesn't matter because Bucky is SO HOT and the way he looks at Steve, before and after the serum, just...yes. YES THAT. And I love that he's different when they meet again, not in an overwhelming way but there's more--a little darker, a little more intense, because of course he would be, he's been to war now. And it makes the way he follows Steve, the way he looks at him, so painfully perfectly--I don't even know, I just. YES. THAT. Maybe slightly more slashy than I thought. I think Chris Evans is the problem, slash seems to just...roll off him, like water off a duck. But that's not going to stop me for long. ....oh crap, I just realized that this movie's Bucky/Steve dynamic fits perfectly into a very specific type of pairing I have a huge thing for, but the most recent and clearest example of this type is from Glee, and I need to just move on now before I collapse in a pile of shame and regrets.
Steve was also pretty good! Better than I had hoped, I think. The flashes of wit and anger--drawing himself as a dancing monkey, that was PERFECT. The moment of knocking down the flagpole to get the flag, and how he's totally confident as he hands it over. Not arrogant or mocking, just without any pause or uncertainty at all. And I do have a vast and towering Thing for characters who keep getting back up when anyone not a little bit crazy would just stay the hell down. Not just characters who are brave but who go beyond the point of reason and any sense of self-preservation because they're compelled by something inside that's maybe not entirely healthy. So, you know, "I can do this all day"--yesssss. Basically, he felt right, if a little less vibrant--but then that probably comes from only having a couple hours to work with, because he is kind of a slow-burn character in the comics, compared to the usual flashier personalities.
So I want all the fic, of course. I want Peggy/Steve and Steve/Bucky--including pre-movie--and Peggy/Steve/Bucky (...give me a moment, my brain just derailed picturing their INSANELY HOT SEX. ..........okay, I'm good), and then I want to throw Howard in there because why not. And I want ALL the post-defrosting fic. I'm pretty excited for the Avengers movie based on the post-credits preview, but I want someone to write the fic version first, preferably many times, and get it even more right. (Especially if they include Jan, because it just doesn't feel like the Avengers to me without Jan. I imprinted on her!) Oh, and someone should make a movieverse Falcon please, that would be good.
Other stuff...Hugo Weaving was, of course, magnificent, even in his red face and prosthetic nose. The pacing was problematic but mostly in ways I enjoyed, because a story with multiple sequential arcs each with their own climax may not make for a good movie, but it's exactly how comic book stories should go. It felt like the first six-issue arc of a relaunched title--almost exactly, in fact. It's nice when comic book movies feel like comic books in the good ways, not just the shitty ways.
So is there any fic yet? There must be comms at least, and at least one kink meme. Hopefully there is or will soon be a kink meme for the Marvel movieverse in general, because more than half the fun of these movies is crossing them over. Any links? :D?
Oh, and speaking of said movieverse, I saw a preview for the new Spider-Man movie coming next year. And...you can't really judge by previews of course, but it looks a bit dire. The lesson they SHOULD have learned from the crash and burn of the first three is that the whole point of Spider-Man, what makes him appealing and the reason he's stuck around, is Peter Parker and his personality. The themes--secret identity issues, with great power etc.--are important, but they don't carry the character, because honestly being a spider is pretty non-glamorous. It's the character himself that people come back to, and this preview just seemed so bland and glum and very much like the earlier ones. Well, we'll see. But if there's no wisecracking I'll be very, very sad.

Yeah, it's a critique I've seen in a couple of places and I think it's a good critique to be making, if maybe a little meta for where I want to be with this movie right now.

HOWLING COMMANDOS. WHERE IS MY HOWLING COMMANDOS FIC??? I WANT A WHOLE MOVIE WITH THEM!
Hey, they had me at "I'm from Fresno."
Ahem. Structural flaws inherent to the genre aside, this movie made me very happy.
And there's this point where you see Bucky in profile, right, and DUDE, from the side, Sebastian Stan looks like John Barrowman, and then Steve is VERY SAD and CANNOT GET DRUNK and then WAKES UP IN THE FUTURE, and all I can think is "AND THEN HE SEES CAPTAIN JACK HARKNESS FROM THE SIDE AND THINKS IT IS BUCKY AND IT IS NOT AND HE IS SAD AND THEN THE DONE SEX!" Because apparently, I am capable of slashing Chris Evans at will, which is a kind of sad superpower to have.
