i have consumed media related to criminal minds! one episode, and one book. the book is 'killer profile' by max allan collins and it is MADE OF LULZ. it's actually weirdly in-character, if not too terribly exciting or adventurous in that regard, but the writing is just AMAZINGLY BAD. i love it lots.
and the new episode! it was a big mixed bag, although i liked it more than the last several eps. let's make lists!
GOOD:
1. hotch! lots of hotch! acres of hotch! granted, i was hoping that the famed ~hotch-centric episode~ would have a little more to say, but thomas gibson squeezed those tiny shreds of characterization like...SOMETHING EXTRA SQUEEZABLE. and really i just love staring at his stupid face.
2. a lady unsub of reasonable complexity! troubled childhood but not abused and raped, with obvious mental illness but also in touch with reality, and i liked the addition that she came from privilege, it makes things less simple/cliched. (not...by MUCH, but still.)
3. not much reid or prentiss but they were both fabulous in little tiny bits. especially the scene interviewing the madam which was MADE OF LULZ. also FETISH BATMAN, and prentiss' face. that was beautiful.
NEUTRAL:
1. i was very amused that this episode totally feeds into the fanon where Hotch comes from old money in the south. his little moues of distaste when dealing with rich people! "do you want to buy a house?" ".....no." I mean, i'm not super FOND of that fanon, but: lol.
BAD:
1. oooooooh killer call girl in her PANTIES LOOK AT OUR SHOW WE HAVE PANTIES ARE YOU WATCHING US HOW ABOUT NOOOOOOOOOOW
2. it seems like fandom is taking the "how could your wife ever leave you?" line as an excuse for more OMG HALEY IS THE EVILEST WHORE THAT EVER NEEDED TO BE SHOT IN THE STREET LIKE A DOG, which surprises me not at all yet makes me vaguely nauseous anyway! for fuck's SAKE, people, even the shitty tie-in novel I read yesterday seems to understand that Haley is not the devil and Hotch contributed a hell of a lot to his marriage's failure. when your grasp of interpersonal relationships is less astute than Max Allan Collins', YOU HAVE PROBLEMS.

HOSHIT:
1. hotch holding a lady's hand while she dies DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD: that just fucking BROKE MY HEART you guys. it seems like his proportion of "omg he's so GOOD *________*" goes directly up according to how personally emotionally painful it is for him. I APPROVE OF THIS CHARACTERIZATION METHOD.
