even more brief perfume reviews
there are a lot of them. i've been slightly unhinged.
frederic malle, carnal flower: did not dethrone fracas as my prize tuberose, not least because it went through a half hour phase of smelling like a diaper bag. before and after that part was nice, though, and it had decent projection. 3.5/5
diptyque, do son: also not a threat to the throne. a basic tuberose, aside from being (pleasantly) very green. 3.5/5
serge lutens, la vierge de fer: started out as a lovely pear-dominant lily, evolved into a strong honey note that made me realize i hate honey in perfume. 3/5 on average
DS&Durga, white peacock lily: the butteriness of a tuberose, but spread on a lily. fades way too fast for something this expensive but it does smell good. 4/5
lancome, idole: this is such a basic bitch of a scent and i love it. it smells like Perfume. i mean, rose and pear, but also that essential note of Perfume. dries with a slight powderiness that delights me and eventually the vanilla comes forward, then towards the end almost a spiciness. 4/5
diptyque, philosykos: fig, creamy and slightly sweet. fig is a scent that weirdly smells almost exactly the same to me from perfume to perfume, and this is definitely fig. it's nice! 3.5/5
hermes, d'orange vert EDT concentre: a weirdly icy orange? like an orange popsicle. not great. at least it was weird. 2/5
thierry mugler, womanity: this is the one that famously smells like pussy, i believe? i did not get that, i got sea salt and fig and slight citrus and something hard and sharp. like a distressing number of scents, it turned beachy on me eventually (i don't mind the beachy scent but i would rather only have it on purpose). 2.5/5
phlur, tangerine boy: tangerines! 3.5/5
dior, poison EDT (vintage): dry and animalic at first, almost fecal for a moment. then dries fruitier and the tuberose comes out, then the incense. one hour later it's incense and a heavy blackcurrant/plum scent, then after that a slightly cinnamony woodsiness. a little too jammy for me in the middle, but fascinating. 3/5
dior, pure poison EDP: a fresh, chilled floral that borders on "wet wipe." for some reason this is a really common failure mode on me. (see above re: diaper bag, which has actually happened twice.) softens after an hour into a general clean floral, then powdery green. not what i hoped for from its reputation. 3/5
atelier cologne, cedrat enivrant: smells exactly like a freshly cleaned public restroom. this is the second atelier i've tried and they've both been 1000% shit on me. never again. 1/5
BPAL, deep in earth: the geranium is so strong and shrill it borders on offensive, but ultimately i like it a lot. it fades very gracefully and without changing significantly. 4/5
imaginary authors, yesterday haze: my introduction to the existence of whipped cream notes, as like a known concept. like yeah sometimes they make it smell like whipped cream. and it did very much smell like (fig) whipped cream. an interesting hint of iris, before the whipped cream completely takes over. 3.5/5
BPAL, wilde: a rich citrus that develops into something pleasantly inexplicable and bookish, with noticeable thyme. another that evolves to beachy on me, but in a reasonably nice way at least. 3/5
tocca, belle: this smells EXACTLY like sunscreen on me. not coconut, just pure sunscreen smell. a floral sunscreen at first, then just. sunscreen. and nothing else. 2/5
tocca, lucia: a good solid fig with a hint of lemon. 4/5
