I have been playing around with perfumes that are supposed to resemble clove cigarettes. So far there's some random indie scent called "Singed & Unhinged" that's a very nice smoke that I intend to layer with everything that claims it's clove cigarettes but forgot the fire part.

Hi! I am very sorry things are Pretty Bad but glad you are alive.

I have mostly been sticking with old favourites lately -- Comme des Garcons original EDT (now it's fucking freezing, it's a good medicinal scent for winter) and ELDO's Afternoon of a Faun (salty resin immortelle goodness).

I have also been clutching people by the lapels and trying to explain to them why "Terre d'Hermes but too much" is an immaculate authorial perfume choice for Sunil Rao, one of the protagonists of Prophet by Sin Blaché and Helen Macdonald, with which I am currently very obsessed.

Salut!

I have never worn perfume and have to speedwalk past the perfume counter because it hurts. I remember once liking CK for Men when I smelled it, but not enough to give Calvin money for it or wear it.

My sister liked 4711 in the 70s, but I don't know if they still--Yes! They still make it! You can smell like a 70s apolitical hippie wannabe! The label is still hella cool, though.

My dad liked lime Old Spice, which I do not recommend.

My mom liked Chanel No 5.

I just tried Terre d'Hermes for the first time and I loved it, but I can absolutely vividly picture a character for whom too much of it is an apt descriptor.

Yes, it's genuinely good! He has excellent taste! Just. *flailing hand gestures*

Look, you really need to meet Rao, okay? He may be very much some of the things you're picturing and not others:

Absolute trainwreck. I love him so fucking much.

I am in the comments perfume-nerding and trying to explain to people why it's such a perfect choice here.

At least one of the authors has to be a perfume nerd, because there's a passing mention of a character's cologne later in the book which is just as precisely on-point.

The Terre d'Hermes is load-bearing, though. Gets a key role in a major emotional moment.
