perfume update
so the samples i got from surrender to chance arrived today (well, the first order i placed arrived today, there's another on the way bc i have a Problem) and also i have tried several others in the meantime. i still have enough different scents that i could sample another one every single day until may before running out, which is also the date i have set as the soonest i'm allowed to buy any new samples. (i am gonna buy larger decants of a few that i really love, especially if they're a discontinued scent. but nothing new!)
more general thoughts: i would KILL for a perfume with higher(??) sillage. also for one that lasts more than a couple hours. i want to apply perfume and smell it in the back of my mind for the next hour without having to bury my nose in my elbow to huff it. this seems BIZARRELY hard to find. like it know it went too far in the eighties but that was over thirty years ago, surely we can find a middle ground.
some reviews under the cut (rose, "men's" i.e. green/herbal/woodsy, misc.)
three rose scents from StC's beginner rose sampler plus one extra rose
i spilled the first one after only applying to two spots, so i can't properly review any of these three for longevity or sillage since it's not a full application. so this is just the scent for like, the first half hour.
Stella McCartney, Stella: simple and beautiful, it smells like a wet green live rose and also like rose essential oil. love it. if i still like it this much after using the whole sampler i'm probably gonna buy a larger decant.
Dior, Oud Ispahan (2012): this smells exactly like the wicca store with a hint of floral underneath and it makes my soul happy. i used to hate incensey patchouli scents so i'm glad i never tried oud before and prejudiced myself. definitely getting a larger decant of this one, it smells like a beautiful dream. and also the wicca store.
CB I Hate Perfume, Tea/Rose: well, it smells like black tea and roses. it's quite pleasant but not stunning me, especially as the rose gradually vanishes.
(not in the sampler) Atelier Cologne, Rose Anonyme: HATED this. oh my god it's so bad. it doesn't make my physically sick but it smells like something that ought to make me sick. of COURSE this one clung so hard it was still there the next day. it still added enrichment to my enclosure but aaauuuugugghghhghghh. anyway i have 2 vials of this if anyone wants it for no money, maybe it will work better on you.
a couple "men's" scents
Histoires de Parfums, 1828: this is a sharp delight when it first goes on, and an hour later my notes were "phlebotomist (in a good way)". so yeah this smells like if getting bloodwork done were a perfume, but delightful. i risked it and bought a regular travel spray of this one without sampling it, so i have a LOT.
Calvin Klein, Eternity for Men (EDP): absolutely dreamy and one of the longest-lasting scents i've tried (still faintly perceivable up close at three hours). my description was "herbal & sharp green, medicinal in a v good way" and then an hour later the same but also slightly spicy.
and a couple others
Derek Lam 10 Crosby, Rain Day: this starts off as an aromatic green woody scent for me, then turns into "fresh spring day" with a hint of marine and a slight sweetness, and an hour after that smells exactly like the beach at the start of summer. not just like sunscreen but sand, the ocean, some sunscreen, seaweed, drinks in a cooler, sun, et cetera. a mysterious alchemy and it lasts by far the longest of anything i've tried.
Dolce & Gabbana, Light Blue: i thought i would like this a lot more. it's fine, i don't mind smelling like this, it's reasonably pleasant but it's really disappointingly simple. all i got was "citrus" and "clean" and that's how it stayed until it was gone. foolishly impulse-bought a travel spray on amazon bc it was discounted and sounded better than it actually is, so i have a lot of this to get through.
scents i'm looking forward to trying soon:
1. flowerbomb and black opium, which i HATED two years ago and i really want to find out if i still hate them
2. Robert Piguet Fracas EDP (modern version), bc anything called white floral has been my favorite so far. i don't dare try the vintage version bc what if i fall in love with it. like StC sells it, but obviously it's Expensive and i would NOT be able to restrain myself
3. the BPAL imps i bought and largely didn't care for a few years ago, which are mostly from the RPG range--i have druid, chaotic, half-elf, cleric, and gnome, plus a random imp of lust
4. i have 75 samples i haven't tried yet (or not in years) so all of them, basically
(to be clear, i only bought about 40 of those in the last month, the rest i accumulated buying too much lipstick from sephora and getting free samples)
