I made a Les Mis rec list! It is small, but heartfelt. The list-making was prompted by people on Tumblr, but Tumblr is being awful about letting me paste stuff into the entry box AND about letting me put links in my text entries at all, because Tumblr is the worst, so I'm posting it here. I must preface it by noting the following:
1. I am brand new, and many of these stories aren't, so if you're not also new to the fandom you've probably read most of them.
2. There is SO MUCH I have yet to read--I've got about a dozen tabs open right now waiting for me, and that's just the stuff I know about. So there is a lot missing here, most notably almost anything not on AO3. I would love recs for where to start on FF.N, because there's 2500 fics in the Les Mis book category and I do not have the energy to sift through them like I used to.
3. This is all Les Amis stuff, because 1.) I can't ship Javert/Valjean which narrows the field of other stuff considerably, and 2.) let's be real, how else was I going to spend my first few weeks in this fandom? I'm trying to branch out now, slowly. Also, it's mostly book-based, because that's my main interest, and no AUs, because they're not my thing.

"In which the sewers of Paris are used in a way Hugo never intended and in which everyone ought to have taken Jehan more seriously." In my feedback to this fic I mentioned that I was very charmed to see it tagged as a fix-it fic, because it's about the coming of the Great Old Ones and yet: it's totally a fix-it fic. This book.

"In which Enjolras needs Grantaire's help, and Grantaire is unwillingly sober. Set at the end of the July Revolution of 1830." In this story Enjolras is trans*, and it reads (to me) very much like the way someone in the period might live and think of themselves, as well as connecting to larger themes of identity and transformation. And Grantaire just makes my heart ache. This is one of those stories that slides into your head and sneakily becomes the story of a particular canon moment, in this case 1830.

This is the sweetest, loveliest sex pollen gangbang you will ever read. It's Enjolras/everyone and the sex is a perfect window into his relationships with all of them, and so in character. And it's a real story, it's not just sex--I mean, by volume it is in fact mostly sex, and lord knows I have enjoyed plenty of just-sex fic in my time, I'm not knocking it--but it's a story. And it's so good.

Epistolary fic! Epistolary fic about the formation of Les Amis! What could be more wonderful!!

More first meetings, I love first meetings fic. Enjolras and Combeferre, with bonus Courfeyrac, and it just makes me smile so much because all the promise of their friendship is here, not just between the two or three of them but the whole family it's going to build.

I am trying not to rec too many fics by one author, but AMarguerite is giving me a PROBLEM on that front. There's going to be a third one, too. Possibly four. And that's me restraining myself. This fic is hilarious and adorable, an ensemble delight in which Bahorel is particularly magnificent.

ACTUALLY let's get them all done now. This isn't all her fic, btw, just my favorites. So this one is just a little slice of life fic with great ensemble moments and understated tension and friendships and humor and great dialogue and a very canon feel, but looser (in a good way). I shouldn't say "just," that's everything I want in this life.

This story should not work. Maybe it won't work for you, IDK, but even though the basic premise (Enjolras gets drunk and everything is Very Silly) is completely opposed to canon and just shouldn't work, it does and it's magical. I almost fell out of my chair laughing at a certain line--actually, no, two--which you will probably know when you come to them.

Enjolras/Combeferre! I go back on forth on whether I ship it or just really intensely enjoy their friendship, but when I do it's just like this.

"The One Where Enjolras Sucks Grantaire Off While Getting Him To Recite Rhetoric Justifying Regicide." Which is pretty much what I was going to say. This is ridiculously hot, and sad, and perfect.

Oh no I lied, it's not all Amis fic, this is Marius/Cosette. Which I would not have thought I'd ever be particularly interested in, but apparently when it's tagged "inexperienced kids fooling around" I am all over that. Very sweet, and a little sad--it's set during Marius's recovery after the barricade--and surprisingly sexy for such a delicate story. I really, really like this Cosette.
