I've been watching Samurai Champloo--slowly, because of work--and so far, at 12 episodes in, I love it! However, the constant sexual assault of the main female character and other women is really getting to me. Does this improve/worsen/stay the same? I love the rest of it enough to keep going, but for fuck's sake, ENOUGH already.

Like, of course the comparison to Cowboy Bebop is inevitable since it's the same director (and one of the other six anime series I've seen any of), and I have to say--even though Faye Valentine spends most of her time in the equivalent of a slightly modest bikini (and gets further undressed on occasion), I never felt this creeping sick feeling while watching that show, and I never felt like the show was making sex jokes about her or treating her as one iota less human than the guys. (Also, she wasn't FIFTEEN, jfc.) I'm not saying that her outfit or the fact that it ~just happened~ to be in character for her wasn't a blatant example of sexism--but I am saying she wasn't repeatedly sexually assaulted, mostly for comedy. And that kind of makes a difference, you know? Oh also, I'm pretty sure Cowboy Bebop never equated "lol sexy rape" with "golden age of sexual freedom." So there's that.

To repeat, I do love this show, except for the sexism/misogyny. There will probably be a squee post pretty soon! I hope others will squee with me! I can't wait to finish it, and upon finishing I will seek out all the fic and vids and devour both. But I also feel betrayed, and really, really tired.
